Tank progress...

One possible solution for a light weight tank is re blowing a PET bottle.
The first experiment in that direction was a success.
Based on preliminary calculations and carbon overwrap it looks to generate a 1000 PSI burst tank with a peroxide MR of better than 19 and a 500 psi burst tank with MR of better than 25.
(Water MR would be: 15 and 20 respectively.)

You can see where the thermocouple measuring the bottle temperature left a mark on the bottom...

And the neck area is not quite right yet...

"When I was a kid" (geez I'm old :-) 2 liter plastic bottles had a hemispherical bottom and plastic cup glued to it so that it would sit on a shelf. It's a pity they don't do it like that any more, it would make a nice liner for a small tank.

Did you put that one in a form to blow it, or just heat it up and inflate?

This was put into a carbon composite mold and re blown. The weirdness at the next is a result of the cooling coils put in to keep the neck cold.

Do you have this in mind for the nano launcher? Do you think you could tweak it to work in orbit? Just curious what kind of applications you see for this.

Nano launcher third stage tank.

Multiple units of these would be put together to be 2nd stage tanks.

1st stage may be metal.

I'd be tempted to say first stage has to be reuseable, but wonder what would Masten say on this. His experience with the project of reuseable VTVL is priceless here.

Working on "obviously useful" parts has the advantage of postponing complex decisions until after some results are available from early prototypes. May help with estimating the cost and time.

Very interesting... Looks sturdy enough for low pressure tankage, but how about strength at low temperatures or high?

A lot of this knowledge has already been gained by water rocket enthusiasts. They wrap the bottles in CF strands & splice bottles.

Well this is my first visit. Great stuff over the blog. Illustration has something special and I think we can't avoid this kind of initiative.
