Why I like this project....

There is very little I enjoy more than learning something new. A traditional aerospace project is an effort involving thousands of specialties. This offers the opportunity to learn thousands of specialties. I have received my Peroxide compatible pump, fuel pump, and motor. I’m in the process of assembling a gear box. I’ve never built a gear box before so one gets to learn new terms like pressure angle and involute. As well as use new tools.. I’m continuously impressed with the variety of free tools available on the web. I’d gathered all the shafts, bearings, gears, parts and etc in to a big pile on my desk. I spent the better part of yesterday laying out the gear box.

I have a fully 3d capable cad system, but I usually do my layouts as 2D line drawings. I find this easier than making a 3D model. My gear box sketch is below as I have been using it (Labels added for your viewing pleasure)

I’ve machined the top base plate, the adaptor that joins the peroxide pump to the base plate and the curved offset spacers. (Only shown in top view the semi circular arcs with screw holes ).  Today I’m going to try and build the complicated shaft that connects the two pumps to each other and to the gear drive. I’m also going to finish bore the gears and lighten them. If all goes really well I may even get to a full trial assembly.

This shows the peroxide pump and the aluminum adaptor connecting it to the main plate. It also shows the curved spacers.

Monday Morning update. I machined the shaft and couplers for the pump side , I also lightened he commercial gears and bored the one that needed bored.

You do nice machine work. Interesting idea having a parallel gear layout that allows you to easily change the ratio on each/either side to vary the volume ratios between the two fuel pumps. How much torque from the electric motor is required to run the volumes required?

I would also like to see a post (one day) that details to free tools and resources that have helped your project. It would be good for the rest of us to further read - as I also like to learn new things.

BTW: How did the test of the new catalyst go from the previous post?

The new cat test has not been run.
We have a number of things we want to test in Late December early January. The primary reason to go out that week was to support/ share with some of the other people going out to FAR. all of their test have been delayed until the new year. Until we have all out test projects done (like the pump) we can probably better spend our time at home in the shop. The weather has also been bad.

Thank you for the reply. Being in Australia currently in the middle of summer its sometimes easy to forget the issue of snow and the impact that would have.
I am very interested in the idea of using a pump rather than a pure pressure driven feed so I will keenly follow your progress.
Your inspiring me (and I am sure others) to do further research. Expand my own knowledge and also believe that this is possible when you have limited resources. Great stuff.

Paul, one comment about your gear box regarding tolerances: ideally the two gears pitch diameters are perfectly tangent to one another. In the real world we have to deal with tolerances so make sure the two shaft centerlines are [(pitch diameter 1)/2] + [(pitch diameter 2)/2] +.003/-.000. It's important that the gears pitch diameters not be in the negative tolerance or they will use require additional torque causing additional power draw and decreasing gear efficiency.

This is also a very good post which I really enjoyed reading. It is not everyday that I have the possibility to see something like this.
